Microcredit Gets Children Back to School
Helping kids gets back to School
School is free in Sri Lanka, but every child requires a school uniform and some basic school supplies before they can attend. There are families in Kalmunai that are too poor to provide these basic necessities and their children stay at home. Often these children have lost one or both parents and live with a widowed mother or grand-mother who struggles just to find enough food for the children. School is an unobtainable dream.
This year our Community Support Workers found 49 children who were not in school. We worked with the families providing counseling and financial advice and helped each family develop a business plan and start a small business that will generate income. We provided small scholarships to buy uniforms and basic school supplies. Today, all 49 children are back in school! All the families are up to date on their loan repayments and their businesses are doing well.
If you would like to sponsor one of these children you it costs just $20/month. Donate on-line through www.rosecharities.ca.
